Teachers and Vocational Education at Spectra Secondary
After the release of PSLE results, I was posted to the Normal Technical stream. I was disheartened and I felt that I was not good enough. I wanted to give up. The turning point came when I visited Spectra Secondary School with my parents. I was struck by how friendly and approachable the teachers were. There were also many vocational education facilities that I had never seen in primary school. By the end of the tour, I was so impressed with the school that I told my parents clearly and firmly that I want to go to Spectra. We registered on the spot.
The Community at Spectra Secondary
The way lessons were conducted were fun and engaging. The teachers went the extra mile to help every student, given the smaller class size of 20. These little experiences helped grow my self-confidence and boost my self-esteem. From a student who thought that I was not going to go very far academically, I was motivated to go further and excel. The opportunities and encouragement from my teachers and friends at Spectra made me who I am today.
Leadership and Industry Experience Opportunities at Spectra
I recall three major opportunities that were presented to me. Firstly, I discovered my passion for photography in the Spectra Media Club. I covered many events and learnt a lot about Visual Communications. This led me to where I am today.
My second major opportunity was being able to pursue a vocational subject of my choice. Spectra offers vocational taster modules at lower secondary and I specialised in Mechanical Servicing at upper secondary.
I went on work attachment at the Mandarin Oriental Singapore during the Industry Experiential Programme at Spectra. I got to spend a month in the industry to experience work life first hand and meet many wonderful masters in the industry.
My third major opportunity was taking on leadership roles in the Student Council. I had opportunities to grow and work with my peers. Unexpectedly, I became the president of the first student council in Spectra.
I used to be a nervous wreck when it comes to public speaking but after multiple opportunities to address the school on stage, I became more confident to speak in front of the school. This gave me a comparative advantage in ITE and Polytechnic.
I am very thankful to the teachers and staff at Spectra for believing in me. If you are still deciding which school to go to after PSLE, I will definitely recommend Spectra Secondary School!
