Mother Tongue Languages
The main aim of the second language curriculum is communication. We would like our students to be able to converse comfortably in a language apart from English. This is particularly important for minority ethnic communities because the language also embodies their culture. However, it has become more difficult to achieve this as more and more students are from English-speaking homes, where the “mother tongue” is hardly spoken, if at all.
Therefore, in an effort to keep the second language alive in school and also the community, in Spectra, we look into providing as many opportunities as possible for students to speak to and interact with each other in their Second Language through singing of songs, story telling and engaging them in various discussions. As students become accustomed to the language, they will become more confident in using it.
Mother Tongue Languages Curriculum
To help Spectrans learn languages in a fun way, MOE has developed interactive media resources for the respective Mother Tongue languages:
- Chinese Language – http://xuele.moe.edu.sg
- Malay Language – http://tinta.moe.edu.sg
- Tamil Language – http://sangamam.moe.edu.sg
To instill the love for Mother Tongue language and culture through progressive and innovative teaching. We envision for Spectrans to be able to use a Second Language to be able to engage and connect with other cultures and people, using the Ministry of Education Singapore, N(T) Mother Tongue Syllabus.
